Cliwal Diving Chronogarph

Divers and chronographs are among the most popular styles of vintage timepieces out there, and with great reason. They were designed for use by men of action we all wanted to be as children- race car drivers, explorers, pilots, and even astronauts. They hark back to an era when a wristwatch was truly a tool, where form followed function, not the other way around.

So what do you get when you combine a diver and a chronograph into one watch? A Cliwal, of course!

While our love for the big names in vintage chronos - Unviersal Genève, Heuer, Breitling - knows no bounds, the truth of the matter is that the 60’s and 70’s were a high point for sporty chronographs, with dozens, if not hundreds, of brands bringing compelling examples to market.

Cliwal is a brand we've honestly never encountered before, and may never again, but that doesn't diminish our appreciation for this killer timepiece.

Using a simple steel case design reminiscent of some of our favorite vintage divers, this example features a lovely gloss black dial with contrasting registers, applied hour markers, and a rotating black bezel. Inside, this watch is built around the stalwart Valjoux 7733 manual winding chronograph movement, a popular choice of the era also utilized by heavyweights like Breitling and Heuer, confirming its provenance as one of the innumerable contract-built and who-knows-how branded pieces from the golden era of sports watches.

Underneath an obscure name, this Cliwal presents a serious value proposition thanks to its quality construction, reliable guts, and great looks.
