Certina DS

Looks can be deceiving.

In the 1950's, Certina was on its way up. While they already enjoyed an enviable reputation as early pioneers of in-house automatic movements, engineer Phillip Kruth decided that wasn't enough and set out to build the most rugged wristwatch he could. After countless experiments, he landed on the "Double Safety" system. Among other things, the DS system calls for a thick elastic mount for the movement, additional seals, a reinforced crystal, and a specially designed caseback.

Of course, limits like this are meant to be tested, so in May 1960, the Certina DS Ref. 5601-003 accompanied Max Eiselin and his Swiss team to the Himalayas. One plane crash and a few close calls later, they became the first to summit Dhaulagiri, one of the more prominent (and dangerous) of the world's tallest peaks. Mr. Eiselin has his DS to this day.

Given its looks, you'd be forgiven for not knowing, or even considering, all of this. Between the long, gently curved lugs, the minimal black dial, and the slender sword-style hands, you could be thinking how nicely it would look under the cuff of your favorite dress shirt. But make no mistake about it- this watch was designed, above all, to be tough as nails and capable of operating effectively under incredibly harsh conditions.

While the name raises few eyebrows, the Certina DS proves that badass looks and an impeccable pedigree need not cost a fortune.
