Clebar Chronodiver

Chronodivers are an interesting sub-species of horology. Since the advent of SCUBA diving, watch brands concerned themselves with producing waterproof watches that could be used by divers to time their dives and ascertain how much oxygen was left in their tanks. With the proliferation of dive watches in the late 1950s and early 1960s, it occurred to some brands to combine a diver with a chronograph, resulting in a type of watch that is certainly unique.

They hark back to an era when a wristwatch was truly a tool, where form followed function, not the other way around.

Brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre and Hamilton produced them, but the prevalence of the style throughout the Swiss watch industry proves just how popular it was.

This watch was produced under the brand name Clebar (which is French slang for “wet dog”), which was first registered in LeLocle in the 1940s as a subsidiary of Zodiac. It was used for high-grade stopwatches and rally timers for racing and sporting events. Of particular note are the beautiful chronographs which they produced and distributed in conjunction with more well known brands, including Heuer, giving rise to the nickname of "poor man's Heuer" (due to their relative affordability when compared to the Heuer-branded chronographs).

In producing this watch, Clebar availed themselves of a contract case similar to those used by brands like Cliwal and Tradition (itself a house brand of retail-by-mail department store Sears). With its bulky case and rotating bezel, it shares design DNA with many chronographs of this type. Its white-on-black "reverse panda" dial layout gives it a sporty flair.
