Hamilton Odyssee 2001

Hamilton is a brand that's been experiencing quite a renaissance of late by drawing on its rich history, and believe it or not, that even applies to their marketing tactics. If you think Interstellar was the first time a Hamilton could be found on the wrist of a silver screen explorer, think again.

As long as Hamilton has been around, they've pushed the envelope of design. They really didn't do cookie cutter, releasing a line of futuristic, asymmetrical designs starting in the 1950's. These funky watches caught the eye of none other than Stanley Kubrick, who thought Hamilton would be a great candidate to design the watch of the future for his upcoming film, "2001: A Space Odyssey."

For the movie, Hamilton designed a futuristic cuff-style wristwatch with GMT and alarm functions, but even a replica proved too expensive to manufacture at scale. Hamilton then used the design as an inspiration for a simpler but equally funky model to release as a tie in to the film in 1969, which they dubbed the "Odyssee 2001" (using the French spelling to skirt copyright laws).

It was an immediate hit, and Hamilton couldn't keep up with demand, making finding a complete one in excellent condition nearly 50 years later a real treat.

Every part of this 2nd interation of the Odyssee 2001 oozes retro-futuristic cool, beginning with the large polished stainless steel case- it's actually thicker at the top, causing it to tilt ever so slightly towards you as it sits on the wrist. The dial features large applied hour markers in an oblong black chapter ring, a porthole date window at 6:00, and slender stick hands. Of particular note is the Hamilton-signed mesh bracelet- a rarity in its own right!

If you're looking for a truly unique blast from the past, the Odyssee 2001 is in a class of its own.
