Mitchell Waterproof

We love telling stories here. It's probably the thing we love most about vintage watches. But sometimes the story is even more far flung than you thought it would be.

We took one look at this funky, oversized watch with the cool dial and hands and loved it right away- it really is unlike anything we've seen. We'd never heard of Mitchell, but one look at our site will show you that's never stopped us- there are dozens, if not hundreds of brands out there with names stranger than Mitchell that had their moment in the sun before the quartz crisis wreaked havoc on the Swiss watch industry in the 70's and 80's.

After quite a bit of digging, it turns out Mitchell has nothing to do with watches at all.

Mitchell, as it turns out, was a very well regarded French manufacturer of fishing reels. That's right- fishing reels. A bit of Googling shows that their reputation, to this day, is impeccable, with websites devoted to sharing information about vintage Mitchell reels and waxing poetic about how well engineered and built they were in the old days (sounds a little familiar).

How their name ended up on the dial of a watch is anyone's guess- our bet is on some sort of giveaway, where you could get the watch for a discounted price with purchase of a reel, similar to the Heuer Viceroy and others of the era.

Given that Mitchell was based in France, it's no surprise that this watch was made there as well, which may explain its truly unique looks. The bold, triangular hour markers and large sword-style hands have taken on a stunning, even patina from age, and the gloss black dial shows hints of turning brown. Add a robust, handwound Lorsa movement and a contemporary-sized 37mm case, and one thing is clear- for a fishing reel company, Mitchell had a hand in making one hell of a watch.
