Tradition Chronodiver

In the world of vintage watches, the 1960s could in many ways be likened to the Wild West in terms of design and functionality. Thanks to the the prevalence of contract manufacturing, any brand could produce watches in limited runs, taking a dial from here and a case from there, and rebranding it with their own name. Though contract manufacturing has by no means disappeared, the 1960s were perhaps the true golden age for this spirit of innovation and industry.

Sears & Roebuck is a department store that's well-known in the U.S., mostly for their appliances and in-house brand of tools, Craftsman. But from the store's earliest days in the 1880s and 1890s, Sears and his partner Roebuck sold watches. Sears, a former railroad agent, offered pocket watches along with the farming equipment, sewing machines, and other goods that they listed in their catalog for their rural clientele.

By the 1950s, the company shifted to a more urban environment, and the focus shifted toward city dwellers. Around this time, Sears began to sell a sporty line of wristwatches that they branded "Tradition." Though best known for their "Poor Man's Heuers," the Tradition line also encompassed divers and chronographs like this chrono diver.

With a chunky cushion case, this chrono diver is a snapshot of 1960s design trends. The rotating bezel is an unusual functional touch. Splashes of color on the dial give it a unique flair that's sure to catch eyes.
