Beacon Hill Glycine Combat

Beacon Hill Glycine Combat

If you've been following us for any amount of time, you know that we subscribe to the ethos that name isn't everything when it comes to vintage watches. There are tons of awesome vintage watches that add up to more than the sum of their parts, if for no other reason that they were manufactured by "the big names," then simply re-branded and sold by someone else.

These arrangements took many forms and have yielded some really interesting pieces across the price spectrum- "Poor Man's Heuers" by Zodiac and Clebar and LeJour-branded twins of Yema's bold chronographs are two recent examples gaining popularity. In this case, the name on the dial says "Beacon Hill" but the watch itself is none other than the Glycine Combat.

Dating back over 100 years, Glycine is one of the few Swiss brands that has not only remained continuously in operation, but independent of a takeover from a larger conglomerate. Glycine gained a newfound popularity in the 1950's with the Airman, a 24 hour watch with a rotating bezel popular among pilots owing to its ability to easily track two time zones.

In keeping with its name, the Combat features a stark black military-inspired dial with bold arabic hour markers and an inner 24-hour track with date at 3:00. The case is a 34mm compressor-style case by EPSA, complete with a crosshatched crown- in this execution, however, the case has a matte gray, almost bead-blasted appearance and subtle bevels on the drilled lugs.

Beacon Hill may not mean much to most people, but this piece is yet another example of when the name is only part of the story.

Steel Compressor Case is approximately 34mm (excluding the crown). ETA 2472 movement. Circa late 1960's.

Overall condition: Case is in excellent over all, showing very slight signs of wear from age and some slight scratches on the backs of the lugs. Dial and hands are in good condition showing a fine patina from age across both. Crosshatched crown and unsigned snap-on case back.

Includes one 18mm two-part olive green nylon strap and an 18mm nylon strap by Crown & Buckle.
