Breitling Panda Chronograph

Breitling Panda Chronograph

When it comes to collecting vintage chronographs, Breitling can be a polarizing brand. Generally known for their Navitimer aviation computer watches, many find their dial designs hectic and difficult to read for daily wear (we don't know how to use a Navitimer's slide rule any more than you do). While those pieces are indisputably cool, they are indeed a lot to take in, and as a result Breitling doesn't always get the same appreciation as some of their contemporary counterparts.

We'd like to change that.

In the 1960s, when the Navitimer Reference 806 "Cosmonaute" orbited the planet on the wrist of Scott Carpenter, Breitling launched a line of simpler, more subdued chronographs.  They were meant for more basic tasks than timing an orbital burn, such as driving a car in circles or making dinner.

These chronographs came in a variety of case, dial and movement configurations. However, whether in a steel or gold-plated case, they were united by their clean and classic style. Although reminiscent of a Heuer Carrera or Rolex Daytona, these chronographs maintained their own identity and have become classics in their own right.

This particular example features a 36mm chrome-plated case, which contrasts handsomely with the inverse panda of the dial. Although vintage Breitling might fly under the radar when compared to Heuer or Omega, this watch will do anything but. Watches like this one are certainly catching on, and with looks as sharp as this one has, we know why.
