Bucherer Chronograph

In the watch industry, a family-owned company is a rare thing. At several times throughout the 20th century, former competitors adopted a "join, or die" mentality in order to ensure the industry's survival. That only became more important as the Quartz Crisis brought many companies to their knees.

And yet there were some that managed to stay afloat and independent, run by the families that founded them. Patek Philippe is perhaps the best-known of these, remaining in the hands of the Stern family who have owned it since 1932. But there are a few others that stand out as beacons of independence and self-reliance.

Bucherer is one such company.

Founded in 1888 by Carl F. Bucherer, the company was both a boutique and a manufacturer, selling--and later producing--pens, jewelry, and of course watches. While making watches of its own, Bucherer also retailed watches made by Rolex, and these examples were often double-signed. For its own line of watches, Bucherer distinguished itself as one of the first to adopt straps on their watches, which they started doing as early as 1919.

Like Rolex, Bucherer concerned itself in the production of chronometer-certified watches. In the 1960s, the company became one of the top three producers of watches in Switzerland, with production numbering in the tens of thousands. The company also made its name as part of the consortium that brought out the Beta 21, the first Swiss quartz movement.

With its 36mm chrome-plated cushion case, this particular chronograph is the perfect size for daily wear. Its blue "reverse panda" dial is a quirky play on the classic white-on-black color scheme that's so popular nowadays. On a NATO, it's cool and comfortable, and is sure to be your choice for the summer.
