CWC W10 circa 1977

Military issued wristwatches are one of the coolest subsets of vintage timepiece collecting, if for no other reason that they were built for exactly one reason- to kick ass. It's easy to forget in today's world of super precise digital timing and measurement, but a wristwatch was an extremely important tool, whether you were on land, in the air, or at sea.

The British Ministry of Defence and Her Majesty's Armed Forces have a long history with timepieces, and many of their issued watches have become cult favorites among collectors. In the 1940's, the MoD contracted with 12 brands for the W.W.W. (Watch, Wrist, Waterproof), but by the 1970's, the general issue wristwatch was designated as the W10.

First manufactured by Smiths, the contract passed to Hamilton in the early 1970's after Smiths went out of business, and then to the Cabot Watch Company (CWC), in 1976. CWC still supplies a descendent of this model, the quartz-powered G10, to the British military to this day.

This particular example dates to 1977, making it among the earliest CWC branded examples. It features all of the hallmarks of a proper military watch- a black, easy to read dial, fixed spring bars, and engraved caseback. Like the Hamilton model it replaced, the CWC W10 sports a 35mm tonneau shaped case and is powered by a hand-wound ETA 2750 movement with hacking feature.

Unlike the multitude of "vintage military style" wristwatches available from a growing number of fashion retailers, the CWC W10 is the real deal. Don’t miss your chance to own one of the best bargains in authentic military timepieces.
