Eterna-Matic Steel

Eterna-Matic Steel

Eterna has its roots in 1856 when Dr. Joseph Girard and Urs Schild founded the èbauche factory "Dr. Girard & Schild." By the end of the 19th century the manufacture was producing entire watches in-house, including wristwatches, then becoming popular. In 1905 the company changed its name to Eterna, and in 1908 Eterna filed a patent for the first alarm wristwatch, which entered production in 1914.

Eterna is also the founder of an entity whose products are ubiquitous in the modern Swiss watch industry--none other than ETA S.A.

The brand also produced their first automatic wristwatch in 1938, following that a decade later with a revolutionary ball-bearing-mounted rotor which Eterna would patent as the Eterna Matic.

While the Kon-Tiki (released in 1958 in honor of Norwegian explorer Thor Heyderdahl's legendary raft) is perhaps the best-known of the Eterna-Matics, the brand also produced a slew of other designs, ranging from the dressy to the sporty and many in between.

This particular Eterna-Matic in steel is a fine example of a tuxedo watch from the 1960s. Though the case is substantial, elegant touches like the curved lugs, recessed crown, and applied hour markers would make it an excellent tuxedo watch. Powered by a Caliber 1420 Eterna movement, it's been recently serviced, and will make a trustworthy companion for many years to come.

Stainless steel case is approximately 35mm. Eterna Automatic Movement. Circa 1960s.

Overall Condition: Stainless steel case is in very good condition with sharp lugs and very little signs of polishing. Case does have minimal signs of use and wear throughout in keeping with its age. Dial is in very good condition with signs of age, particularly some darkening between 3 and 7 o'clock. Luminescent elements of the hour plots and hands show signs of patina. Unsigned crown. Case back has some faint scratches and tool marks but is in otherwise very good condition.

Includes one 19mm dark brown leather strap.
