Hamilton Chrono-Diver "Big Eye"

From its beginnings in 1892, Hamilton has excelled at making good watches cheaply--inexpensively, that is, not cheaply made. Its chronographs are a perfect example of this. From the Chronomatic to the Pan-Europ, Hamilton proves that you can still have a solid case and a reliable Swiss movement at a much better bargain than some of the other guys.

The Chrono-Diver or Big Eye--Reference 647001-3--hit the market in 1970. The name is a dead giveaway for its intended purpose. Like its cousin the Bulova 666 Chronograph (which it shares a case and movement, the Valjoux 7733, with) it's a hybrid of a chronograph and a diver. The chunky 38mm stainless steel cushion case, with its brushed finishing and bi-directional rotating bezel, has all the design characteristics of a watch from the 1970s.

But most notable are the large double registers on the dial, which gave the Chrono-Diver the nickname "Big Eye." Larger than registers on other Hamilton chronographs of the period, they stand out, contrasting expertly with the black dial. This "reverse panda" colorway is certainly one of the most desirable in the vintage chrono market today, and Hamilton does it well in the Chrono-Diver, setting it off even more with the red accents of the chapter ring, the central chronograph hand, and in the printing of the registers themselves.

The Chrono-Diver seems to get a lot of traction on Ebay and the forums, but its ubiquity takes nothing away from its quality. This is as solid a chronograph as they come, and ours is in New Old Stock condition. Sturdy yet comfortable thanks to the short lugs, and easy to service thanks to the workhorse Valjoux 7733 movement, this is a watch that's sure to please.
