Jules Jurgensen Automatic Gents

Before the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s, when the watch industry - Swiss and Japanese alike - scrambled to adopt the new quartz technology, mechanical watch brands popped up like mushrooms on a rainy day. But at the heart of many of these brands were often small, family-run operations that sought to capitalize on clockmaking legacies. As quartz movements increased in production and distribution, many of these operations were vastly undercut and gradually faded out of existence or were scooped up by larger, more powerful coalitions. But while those companies disappeared, the watches that they produced remain, unfamiliar names that belie their quality construction.

Jules Jurgensen is one such brand. While Jules himself was born in 1808 in Switzerland, he was actually the third generation of Jurgensen to be in the watch business. His grandfather, Jürgen Jürgensen, had set up shop in Copenhagen in 1740 and his father Urban was a well known maker of Marine Chronometers for the Dutch military at the turn of the 19th century.

Between the 1930's and 1970's, the Jules Jurgensen name was no longer family owned, but still sported the finest Swiss components and its two century old legacy on the dial (even if it was for marketing purposes).

What we bring you here is a handsome gent's watch from the 1960's. It's packed with great details, from the faceted hour markers to the fancy lugs and dauphine hands.
