Omega DeVille f300hz

In 1960, Bulova launched the Accutron, the world's first electronic movement. Rather than a balance wheel, these movements have a battery-powered tuning fork which operated in the place of an escapement to regulate the movement. Before long, a number of other brands, including Omega, had licensed this cutting edge technology and were using tuning fork movements in their own pieces.

Tuning fork movements offer a few advantages over their mechanical counterparts, most notably the fact that they don't need to be wound and are extremely accurate - Omega and others claimed accuracy of +/-2 seconds per day. In the flesh, they are distinctive. The ultra-smooth sweep of the second hand and the tell-tale hum of the movement are found in no other kinds of watches. Unfortunately, the tuning fork movement's popularity was short lived, owing to the introduction of quartz movements, which were cheaper to produce and seen as more accurate.

Omega branded its electronic movements as the f300hz, a nod to the frequency of the tuning fork's oscillations, and put them into a variety of cases and styles, including the dressier De Ville line. This particular piece dates to the early 1970's and features nicely sized 35mm case clad in yellow gold plating, beautiful blue dial, and the original Omega beads of rice bracelet.
