Seiko 6138 Jumbo Chronograph

Seiko 6138 Jumbo Chronograph

To many people, Seiko is just another inexpensive watch brand - but if you’ve made it to this far, you know that nothing could be further from the truth.

For over 135 years, Seiko has been cranking out innovative and impeccably engineered watches at every price point, from entry level Seiko 5s to world-class high horology Grand Seikos. Underpinning Seiko's efforts has been the mass production of reliable and accurate movements capable of being paired with a wide array of case and dial configurations. And though the Swiss often get all the glory for producing the first automatic chronograph in 1969, Seiko quietly released the 6139, a rugged automatic chronograph unit as early as May of the same year.

In 1970, they made a few tweaks, including an hour totalizer and a new quickset system and released their oddly named follow up, the 6138. Like its predecessor, the 6138 could be found in a large number of unique dial, case, and color configurations that have maintained collector interest through the years. Many of these variants are now commonly known by equally colorful nicknames, so when you hear a watch guy talk about the Bullhead, UFO, Big Blue, or John Player Special, they're talking about 6138's.

Like its brethren, the 6138-3009 we have here also goes by another name- Jumbo- thanks to its large (for the era) 42mm steel case. This particular example is in superb, honest condition, allowing us to fully appreciate all of the details vintage Seikos bring to the table. The factory finishing on the case is top notch, with delicate interplay between brushed and polished surfaces. The dial is one of our favorites thanks to a unique, three tiered design which gives it tremendous depth, and the slender, yellow chronograph hands add just the right pop of color against the black background.

With reliable internals and memorable looks, this 6138 Jumbo reminds us why a vintage Seiko chronograph makes a compelling addition to any collection.
