Seiko 6139-6020 Pulsations Chronograph

Seiko 6139-6020 Pulsations Chronograph

While the Swiss get all the glory for producing the first automatic chronograph in 1969, Seiko quietly released the 6139, a simple and rugged automatic chronograph movement, as early as May of the same year.

A few years ago, it was revealed that the Calibre 6139 was the first automatic movement in space--thanks to Col. Willam Pogue--making 6139-powered chronographs an awesomely affordable entry to watch history.

While Col. Pogue's watch made waves and increased the value of the Reference 6139-6002 model, other 6139-powered chronographs have remained remarkably low on the pricing spectrum, and offer a great way to enter the vintage watch world on any budget.

Seiko produced these movements on a huge scale in a variety of distinctive dial and case designs that only they could dream up, but finding them in unmolested condition has become increasingly difficult.

This particular example has large, deep case and steeply angled lugs. The case is in great shape, with correct finishes all around including a delicate radial brushing on the base of the case, and a high-polished bezel--little details that are often lost in the hands of a careless owner or watchmaker. The dial has an usual depth to it, with a recessed sub-register.

But what's most unusual about this watch is that is has a pulsations ring on the outer edge of the dial, a feature that's uncommonly-seen in this reference (or in chronographs, period, really).

With the trademark day-date at 3:00 (with a Kanji day wheel) and quickset date function, it's a superb daily wear watch for anyone who desires an attractive and unusual iteration of a popular chronograph.
